our subject is a cursed three-piece band coming from PARIS, FRANCE...
the response to 'BUGS' was enthusiastic from zines and local radios but more encouraging was the response from the public on gigs occasions. however, difficulties emmerged from a lack of gigs opportunities. as far as 'rock '(especially when it is loud and English-sung) is concerned, FRANCE is hell for a band. so when money allowed,
'FLUSH' received an excellent welcome from zines and radios over EUROPE. to this point,
for their 3rd demo 7 Pre-Apocalyptic Anthems, released on CD support in 97,
in 1998, several independant labels and distributors offered to distribute "7 Pre-Apocalyptic Anthems".
the band also partcipated to Industrial Baby, a 2 CDs compilation released by Delinquent Records.
in 1999,
"Of Innocence" and The New site
at the dawn of 2001,
wake up call was founded in April 93. the band originally included michelle, vocals, guitars; candy, guitars; and eddie, drums. candy and michelle had been looking for musicians since 89 (and michelle even before) before they found eddie in 93, a beginner drummer then. during the first year, the band lacked a bassist, so michelle finaly dropped her guitar for the bass (she abandonned bass at the release of "7 Pre-Apocalyptic Anthems).wake up call played their first gig in a pub in the suburbs of PARIS the following year. the place was closed a short time later because of noise disturbance. this event sums up the difficulties the band has faced to play live in FRANCE ever since.
in early 95, wake up call released a first self-made demo-tape called 'BUGS'. recorded at night, in one live cession, the five tracks are raw, with a dry sound. the cover sleeve (on which we can see a stylized head rotten by bugs) and unfold artwork were painted by michelle, under the name Bad Taste Design. 'BUGS' was sold only $2, as the band rather focussed on attracting more fans than making (anyway no) profit.
promotion and all matters related to wake up call were assumed by the band: pictures, promotion, debts...wake up call managed to produce their own gigs, in front of a reduced but dynamic crowd.
their second self-produced demo-tape (called 'FLUSH') was recorded in several cessions in early 96. the sleeve was still made by Bad Taste Design (now michelle + candy) and included a booklet with pictures by Gillian KISTIAKOVSKY, a relative.wake up call started to be noticed in the FRENCH national press and even overseas...
the Whole World VS wake up call
wake up call controlled the whole process : from recording to production and of course, design.
the general vibe directly arises from misunderstanding and frustration. you can listen to the result of 6 months of hard work by clicking HERE.
with the opening of an
Official Website
and worlwide self promotion, wake up call
succeded in attracting new listeners an interest
from magazines, promoters, and even labels.
thanks to this, they were given the opportunity to
play at the Super Rock festival in Portugal (August 97) in front of more than 2000 people
(see above and left).
The End ?
wake up call started recording their new CD
which release was expected for 2000.
Unfortunately, broke, discouraged, the band entered a period of inactivity and the new songs remained created, but not recorded...wake up call are finally coming back from the dead and have decided to pollute the world a little longer and finish their work.
Of Innocence, the unfinished project, is coming out first on their new site as the new songs are beeing injected in mp3 format.
